How it works

From step dimensions to solid concrete volume

The calculator builds the complete stepped profile from stacked rectangular layers, then adds your selected waste allowance.

Solid staircase formula

For N steps, the layer count is N(N + 1) ÷ 2.

Volume = Width × Tread × Riser × N(N + 1) ÷ 2

Required concrete = Volume × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)

For four solid steps, the vertical layers are 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10. This discrete stepped formula is more exact than replacing the profile with a triangle.

What each dimension means

Riser height is each vertical increment, tread depth is each horizontal step surface, and stair width is the extrusion across the staircase. Total rise equals steps × riser; total run equals steps × tread.

Worked example: four solid steps

Four steps, 4 ft wide, with 7 in risers, 11 in treads, and 10% waste produce 21.39 ft³ (0.79 yd³) before waste, 2.14 ft³ (about 0.08 yd³) of waste, and 23.53 ft³ (about 0.87 yd³) total. Total rise is 2 ft 4 in and total run is 3 ft 8 in.

How much concrete do I need for steps?
Enter the number of steps, width, riser height, tread depth, and waste allowance. The calculator estimates the complete solid stepped volume.
What does solid concrete stairs mean?
The entire stepped cross-section is treated as concrete down to its base, with no hollow underside or displaced fill.
Does this include a landing?
No. V1 calculates only one straight, uniform staircase with no landing.
Does it subtract fill beneath the stairs?
No. It does not subtract compacted fill, gravel, cores, or other displaced material.
How is stair volume calculated?
It multiplies width, tread depth, riser height, and the arithmetic layer count N(N + 1) ÷ 2.
What are total rise and total run?
Total rise is the combined vertical height of all risers. Total run is the combined horizontal depth of all treads.
How much waste should I add?
Choose an allowance appropriate to your placement conditions. The calculator does not prescribe one universal percentage.
