Concrete planning tool

Concrete Bag Calculator

Calculate how many bags to purchase when you already know the concrete volume. Enter the yield printed for the specific product you plan to use—not its bag weight.

Enter known volume and product yield

Measurement system

Use the yield listed on the concrete product packaging or manufacturer documentation. Bag weight and yield are not interchangeable.

Purchase quantity

Bags required

Enter a product yield to see your result

Use the yield listed on your chosen concrete product to calculate the number of whole bags to purchase.

How it works

From known volume to whole bags

The calculator adds your selected waste allowance, divides that volume by the product's stated yield, and rounds the purchase quantity up to a whole bag.

Concrete bag formula

Exact bags = Volume including waste ÷ Yield per bag

Bags to purchase = Exact bags rounded up

Rounding up prevents a fractional requirement from becoming a material shortfall. The exact count remains visible so you can audit the calculation.

Why product yield matters

Yield is the volume of mixed concrete a bag produces. Bag weight is not the same measurement, and products with similar weights may list different yields. Use the value printed on the packaging or in the manufacturer's documentation.

Worked example: 80 ft³, 10% waste, 0.60 ft³ per bag

  1. Add the waste allowance80 × 1.10 = 88 ft³
  2. Calculate the exact bag count88 ÷ 0.60 ≈ 146.67 bags
  3. Round up for purchase147 bags
  4. Calculate purchased volume147 × 0.60 = 88.2 ft³

Extra volume: 88.2 − 88 = 0.2 ft³

Waste allowance

Waste is applied to the required volume before bag quantity is calculated. The appropriate allowance depends on the project, so the calculator does not prescribe a universal percentage.

Estimate limitations

This calculator uses the volume and product yield you enter. It does not verify packaging data, account for mixing or placement practices, determine structural requirements, or estimate ready-mix deliveries.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the yield per bag?
Check the concrete product packaging or the manufacturer's documentation for the mixed volume produced by one bag.
Is bag weight the same as concrete yield?
No. Weight describes how heavy the dry product is; yield describes the volume of mixed concrete it produces.
Why does the calculator round up?
Concrete is purchased in whole bags, so any fractional requirement is rounded upward to avoid buying less than the calculated volume.
Can I enter cubic yards?
Yes. In US Customary mode, select cubic yards for the Concrete required field. The calculator preserves the same physical volume.
Can I use Metric units?
Yes. Metric mode accepts required volume in cubic meters and product yield in liters or cubic meters per bag.
Does this calculator account for waste?
Yes. Enter the percentage you want added before the bag quantity is calculated.
Is this suitable for ready-mix concrete?
No. This calculator estimates bagged concrete quantities. Use the Concrete Slab Calculator when you need to establish a rectangular project's concrete volume.
